The Company Car and Personal Accounts

The Company Car is wholly-owned by The Car Co-op, a local not-for-profit co-operative.  We've been car sharing since 1997.

Now a personal use car sharing option is available for employees of The City of Vancouver.

Car sharing is growing quickly everywhere as people discover freedom from the expense and hassles of sole ownership, while still enjoying the flexibility and convenience you've come to expect from cars.  Sign on to the program today and start saving money now!

For a non-refundable registration fee of $50^* and a $500 credit card imprint (authorization only for use in the event of an accident or non-payment of invoice), you can have access to the following rates:

• $3.00 per hour (to a maximum of $36 daily), with no hourly charge between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.
• 40¢ per kilometre for the first 35km,
  25¢ for each additional kilometre up to 150km,
  15¢ per kilometre thereafter
• $2 administration fee for each of the first three bookings of the month; the most you'll pay in admin fees in one month is $6

And if you don't use a Co-op car in a month, you pay nothing!  Our Zero-on-Zero price point gives you the flexibility you need without a concern about cost.

Drivers signing up for this program will not be Car Co-op members – but will enjoy the same access and availability to the entire Co-op vehicle fleet.  You can have a Personal Account for as long as you are an employee of the City of Vancouver.  When you're no longer a city employee, you can choose to join The Car Co-op as a member or try our DepositFree Program.  Your registration fee in either would be waived.

Insurance

All vehicles are insured for work or pleasure purposes with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) under a fleet plan option so The Car Co-op, not the Driver, holds the insurance.  We carry Third Party Legal Liability to $5,000,000 plus Collision and Specified Perils Coverage.  In an at-fault accident, the Driver at fault is responsible for the first $500 of damage just as if you were driving a personally owned or company vehicle. 

The Company Car (TCC) requires a signed credit card imprint to capture this amount in case of an at-fault accident.  If the Driver is deemed NOT at fault by ICBC, then the deductible does not have to be paid.  ICBC is the final arbiter of accountability in all accident situations.

What are the next steps?

The following are the next steps towards signing up for a Personal Account with The Company Car:

#1 – Please send record & history documents

Participation in this program requires from each driver:

• A valid driver's licence;
• At least three years' driving history;
• Three or fewer traffic violations in the last five years;
• No at-fault accidents in the past three years or ICBC discount of 35% or higher; and
• No criminal code convictions under the Motor Vehicle Act.

We will need a record of your driving experiences in the last three to five years.  If:

• you have had a BC driver's licence for three years or more, your ICBC records will be sufficient.  Please contact ICBC Driver Services at 604-661-2255 (extension 5), or toll-free at 1-888-715-7775.  Ask for both documents - your Driving Record and your Claims History - and, for no charge, have them e-mailed to us at .
• you have been driving fewer than three years in BC (and a total of three years or more - somewhere else), you will need to submit additional documents from your old driver's licence within one month of joining TCC.  Links to other provincial licensing authorities can be found at the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators.
• you are from somewhere outside Canada or the USA, we still require your ICBC records (see above) as well as for you to write us a letter stating:
  1. the year you started driving;
  2. the number of traffic violations (speeding ticket, running a red light, ignoring a stop sign, etc.) you have had in the past five years, and in which country you received them;
  3. the number of at-fault accidents you have had in the past three years.

Drivers must have their bills paid automatically either by Pre-Authorized Debit or by credit card.

The form we require for authorization can also be used for Drivers with Personal Accounts and Residential Development Clients to have their bills paid automatically each month by credit card.  As well, it can be used to pay the deposit (if applicable) and any registration fees to start.

#4 – Please visit us or your group for verification & payment

Once you have completed the above steps, please scan/email to or fax to 604-685-1353 all completed forms to us.  Once we've checked your ICBC documents and received confirmation you've finished the online orientation, we'll email you. 

When you send us your stuff, please email us at or call our office at 604.685.1393 to set up a time to come in for a 30-minute registration session. Please sign the forms at our office in front of staff.  We will process your registration fee by credit card.  We will also need to see photo ID (your driver's licence) and proof of your employment with the City of Vancouver.  We will issue you a key.  You can start using the cars as soon as you sign up.

TransLink's Employer Pass Program

Drivers with Personal Accounts can also sign up for TransLink's Employer Pass Program – giving them monthly transit passes for 15% off when they sign up for a minimum of 1 year.  Many workplaces are not able to set this up as TransLink currently requires a minimum of 25 employees participating.  Once you are a Client of The Company Car, we can offer this to you!  If interested, please download the form below, print it out, and bring it to the sign-in.  On that form above "Name of Employer" please put "Co-operative Auto Network".
